3 Tips to Ride Safe on Wet Roads7/25/2020 28% of all deaths occurring in 2018 were the result of two wheeler riders not using a helmet! This number goes significantly higher in inclement weather conditions such as rain, hailstorm or thick fog during which the road surface becomes slippery and visibility conditions become much worse adding to the risk of being involved in an accident.
With the monsoons upon as already, it is very important that you take every possible measure to avoid getting into an accident on the road especially if you are riding a motorcycle or a two wheeler, which by design, has lower road contact compared to four wheelers. Here are 5 tips to ride safe on wet roads during monsoons, or in the winter when the roads are wet because of dew drops. Invest in a good quality motorcycle helmet The first thing that you need to be safe on the road, whether it is wet or dry, is a good helmet to protect your head from physical injury. The laws of nature and physics act upon the human body in such a manner that when you fall off your motorcycle, chances are high that the head is going to make contact with the road surface. The road surface is very hard, add to that the momentum of your speed, and there are very little possibilities of you surviving without a grave injury at the very least. A good quality motorcycle helmets can protect your head in such conditions and save your life. Do not cut corners on the quality of your motorcycle helmet and invest in the best you can afford that has all the industry certifications and safety validations necessary to protect your life. Never leave home without a pair of gloves The second gear that is equally crucial in protecting you from a mishap on the wet road is a pair of gloves. In most road accidents involving motorcyclists or two wheelers, it has been observed that they lose control over their vehicle because of wet fingers slipping on the brake levers or on the accelerator. This can be easily remedied by using a good pair of motorcycling gloves that provides additional grip even when the surface of the accelerator or the brake lever is wet. Replace your visor if there are scratches on it Scratches on the visor are normal with abusive action of dust and macro particles that are present in the air on the road. Over time, the scratches can become big and hinder visibility. This becomes a risk, especially in low visibility conditions during rain or thick fog. To prevent an accident occurring due to the lack of clear visibility, you must always make sure to replace your visor with a new once every 6 to 9 months depending on how active your riding frequency is. Most helmet manufacturers use a high quality visor with oleophobic coating on it to enhance its longevity, but over time this starts eroding away. Visors are very affordable and replacing them periodically ensures better visibility in all conditions. In addition to these tips, make sure that the treads on your Tyre are not completely worn out because they are necessary to maintain grip on the road surface especially during wet conditions. |
