Keeping a helmet smelling fresh is a real challenge, especially for people residing in hot, humid and tropical countries such as India. Even though good quality branded helmet does come with premium inner lining and padding, if the helmet is not maintained properly, there is a very good chance that the helmet will start stinking after continuous usage of 2-3 months. If you don’t want to smell bad every morning after rides, here are 5 tips you should follow starting today.
Buy helmets with removable inner lining & padding The best way to prevent the helmet from stinking is to wash the inner lining and padding as frequently as possible. For people residing in tropics, the ideal time to wash the lining and padding is every 2-3 weeks in the summers and once every two months after autumn. Make sure to check the product box or the manufacturer’s website to find out the right way to remove the padding and lining before washing it. Make sure not to exert too much force on the inner parts while removing in order to prevent damage. After removing the inner parts, soak them in a bucket of soap solution for 15 minutes before washing it under running cold water. Let the parts dry naturally in the shade. Wash and deodorize If the inner parts of the helmet cannot be completely dislodged, do not exert excessive force and consider washing it as is and letting it dry naturally. Just make sure to allow the helmet to dry up completely before using it. For additional freshness, consider deodorizing it with a helmet deodorizer once every week. You can also carry the deodorizer with you and use it whenever you get the opportunity. Regularly cleaning the helmet can make a huge impact on its freshness and longevity over several years of usage. Manage sweat Wear a balaclava or cover the hair with a handkerchief so that it soaks up the sweat and prevents it from being absorbed by the helmet inner lining and padding. Once sweating ceases to soak the helmet, it will become less of a hassle to deal with the bad smell later on. Use a cotton cloth which has a high absorption ratio instead of using synthetic material which will be more effective in keeping the problem of sweating low. You can also use a dedicated under-helmet skull cap which not only keeps the hair from being mangled, but also soaks up the sweat thereby keeping the helmet fresh. Choose a helmet that has a proper air ventilation design which will allow the air to flow in and out easily keeping the head relatively drier in summer. Replace old helmets! If you have been using the same helmet for several years without proper maintenance, there is a very good chance that the inner lining and padding have become saturated with perspiration and no amount washing will remove the odor. If that is the case with you, replace the old helmet with a new one and take care to wash and maintain it regularly. Prefer open face helmet Some people sweat excessively compared to others, if that sounds familiar invest in an open-face helmet rather than a full-face helmet which will allow more air to pass through your hair keeping your head and face dry. You can also get a modular helmet which gives you the best of both an open-face helmet and a full-face helmet.
